A split sole is a type of shoe sole divided into two parts: one under the ball of the foot and one under the heel, leaving the arch area flexible and unsupported in between.
This design allows for greater flexibility and articulation, which is especially helpful in Latin dancing and practice, as it enables dancers to:
- Point their toes more easily
- Achieve a cleaner line
- Feel the floor with more precision
- Strengthen foot muscles through increased natural movement
Split sole shoes are commonly used in Latin or practice styles because they allow the dancer’s foot to move more freely — ideal for high-speed, expressive movements.
In contrast, a full sole (which runs the entire length of the foot) provides more structure and support, making it better suited for Ballroom dancing, where balance, posture, and strong heel leads are key.
